The surroundings

For art lovers Viamaggio is a perfect starting point for visiting places where history and culture have a lot to show. Siena is less than 20 km. away, while Florence is another 100 km. away. It‘s not necessary to go „that far“ because in this area called „Crete Senese“ are many interesting sites which can be reached by car from Viamaggio in 45 minutes.

The abbey of San Galgano was built around 1218 with a tipical cistercian planimetry. The visitors in front of the interior facade all remain enchanted by the highly poetic sight, caused by the pointed arches and slender windows, the beauty of the asp, the contrast of the brickwork with the travertine, the green grass pavement and the blue sky ceiling.

Not far from the abbey you can visit the monastery of Monte Siepi where the sword of San Galgano is stuck inside the rock.

San Gimignano, medieval town with the „100 towers“. Today you can still admire the 15 remaining towers of the once 72 existent noble towers. The small squares are cosy and magic salons. Famous in the whole world for the white dry wine called „Vernaccia of San Gimignano“.

From the hight of 560 metres Montalcino dominates the whole surrounding country side. Castled on a hill where the imposing fortress camps, it‘s the home of the „Brunello“ which by somebody is called the best and famous wine of Italy.
